Twitter Offer Paid Blue Verification Tick – Following Twitter’s decision to make the coveted blue verification check mark a purchaseable item, which caused utter chaos on the platform for a time, Meta appears to be considering the same. Yes, the Twitter Blue approach of charging people for verification may be in the works at Facebook and Instagram as well.
TechDroider has posted a few screenshots from what appears to be a Meta help centre page. They mention a Meta Verified subscription, similar to Twitter Blue, for which users can earn a verification badge for their profile by subscribing.
The blue check from Meta Verified will be redeemable for profiles only, according to the information on the page. Pages will continue to rely on the current channel, in which creators, public figures, celebrities, or global brands receive the verification badge after completing a verification form. Surprisingly, clicking the link for “eligibility criteria for Meta Verified subscriptions” on the same page leads to a broken page. This could be due to the page being unavailable in our region — or failing to be set up in the first place. After all, the Meta Verified subscription doesn’t exist yet, and it’s possible that Meta is just getting ready for it.
This isn’t the first hint that Meta is working on paid Instagram and Facebook verification badges. Alessandro Paluzzi, a developer and reverse engineer who has a track record of spotting features before they’re released on Instagram, shared some references in Instagram’s code with TechCrunch earlier this month. The code included references to “IG NME PAID BLUE BADGE IDV” and “FB NME PAID BLUE BADGE IDV,” with IDV possibly standing for “identity verification,” according to the developer.
Meta has yet to officially hint at paid verification badges on its platforms, so there’s very little to go on other than the aforementioned. It’s also unclear whether the Meta Verified subscription will include any additional benefits besides the blue tick, or how much it will cost. [Twitter offer paid blue verification tick]
